Fluid-structure interaction in bio-inspired flow: Insects meet turbulence

Our team combines the unique perspectives of high-performance computing and experimental biology to address the challenging question of how flying insects cope with turbulent perturbations in the surrounding air flow. This pluridisciplinary project assembles physics, numerical modeling and simulation with experimental biology.

From a physical point of view, our project includes the three main fields of

  • Flapping flight
  • Wing elasticity
  • Turbulent flow

which we investigate using both numerical modeling and experimental techniques. Most of our currently published results are obtained using the FLUSI code, which is an open-source in-house code. It relies on Fourier transforms to compute derivatives in spectral space. We also develop a new adaptive solver, which relies on interpolating wavelets, in order to further push the state of the art of numerical simulations in insect flight.
